SPRING RIDING

Hey folks! I think I'm going to fire up the ol' blog again. It's been a nice riding season already (and it's only April!) and I'd feel selfish if I didn't share it with all of you.

I'll be honest, life's been good, and I wish I could spin out some really fascinating tale of kidnappings and top secret espionage but... that's not gonna happen. Sorry. The truth is, I didn't realize just how bad this blog was going to suffer when I set some New Year's resolutions way back in January. Geesh!

None the less, I'm back and I hope to rekindle your interest in my drivel.  There have been several birdies in my ear letting me know that I've been missed, so with that being said, let's go!
Scenic ride through Horseshoe Bend
I've been enjoying the Boy while logging the miles... one breathless landscape at a time.  That's one thing that has not stopped!  In fact, this past Saturday, somewhere along the Talledega Scenic Highway, Harley and I noticed this busy little bee during one of our rest stops.
Buzzzzzz...
 He was big!

We saw several other riders out and about, so it was a very wavy day.
Fellow riders on Mt. Cheaha
We logged about 280 miles on the bikes while riding on Mt. Cheaha Saturday.  With the temps lingering in the low 70's by lunch time, it was a wonderful way to spend my day... taking notice of the beautiful playground my Creator made for me.

PIC OF THE WEEK - WHAT DO YOU SEE??

I'm posting a picture of a rock.

Not just any rock, mind you, but a rock with... attitude.

Tell me... WHAT DO YOU SEE?

This rock is near one of the lookouts we stop at while exploring fire roads on top of Mt. Rebecca in the Talladega National Forest.

I think it has a distinctive feature about it.  So much so... I thought I would pass it on to my readers to help me come up with a cool title for this picture.

So tell me... what do you see?

Have a great week everybody!

PIC OF THE WEEK - CRIMSON AND CLOVER

Harley and I took off Saturday morning and headed north up to Mt. Cheaha. I love going there and riding the curvy ribbon of highway up to the top of this small mountain. Our roads were full of other riders blowing off the cobwebs of winter and airing out their machines. I hate to brag to all your northerners, but... we saw 87 degrees this weekend!

CRIMSON AND CLOVER
I'm glad we finally found a safe spot to pull off and let me get a great picture of all the amazing clover that's everywhere along our highways. Mother Nature's palate of vibrant red and bright white are lined all along our roads and brings a lot of bright color to your peripheral vision, making it very hard to stay focused on what's in front of you.

There's something very rewarding about topping a large curvy hill just to see a blanket of crimson clover covering a large pasture. Ahhhhhh...

Ah, my mind's such a sweet thing.
I want to do everything.

What a beautiful feeling.

Crimson and clover.
Over and over.
Crimson and clover, over and over,
Crimson and clover, over and over...

Have a nice week everybody!

PIC OF THE WEEK - GIANT PRAYING MANTIS!

Riding your motorcycle through beautiful scenery doesn't mean you stop can watching for debris and road hazards. I realize it's hard to stay focused sometimes, but it's just part of it. While leaf peeping on Mt. Cheaha, we came around the bend of a beautiful fall colored road and got this big surprise!

A GIANT PRAYING MANTIS
A Jurassic sized praying mantis getting ready to take us out as we passed by! Luckily, we were on our toes and we were able to avoid any incident.

Harley snapped this pic to make sure I wasn't eaten by the large stick monster and was still following...
... and I was!

I'm very glad we were able to continue our journey... it allowed us to enjoy more of this!

Happy Monday y'all! Don't work too hard!

HAPPY FALL YA'LL

I love fall. To me, while growing up in Iowa, fall meant... bright foliage and burning leaves, cold noses and sweatshirts, football games with blankets, and the anticipation of... snow days! It seemed like a nice transition from the warm and sunny summer to the long cold winter that allowed us to linger in between that change of season. But now that I live in Alabama, fall for me just isn't the same. Believe it or not, we can get pretty cold here, but it usually goes from warm to cold without much in between. While I've been reading about everyone else's dropping temperatures and winterizing their bikes, I'm thinking... WTF! It's still hot here!

I've been belly aching for weeks that I was ready for cooler weather and the brilliance of fall to show itself. The lingering summer heat was beginning to wear out its welcome as far as I was concerned.

Two weekends ago on the day we rode up to Mt. Cheaha State Park, we finally got our cold snap. The temperatures dropped to the low 50's with an overcast sky, so it was quite chilly during our ride. It was nice to feel cold air around me for a change. Hell, the weekend before this one we were still riding around in nothing but a long sleeve t-shirt with sunny 70's! (oh... I guess I had my jeans and boots on too!) But the point is... we in the south finally got that cool blast from the north we so desperately needed. Thank you Mother Nature!

Riding north for 85 miles made such a difference in the color we saw that I felt priviledged to be so close to such a pretty area. I put together a slide show of our wonderful scenery while we were on our peeping expedition. The great road shots you are about to see were taken by Harley while we were on the move. Who needs a helmet cam??!!

Mt. Cheaha is the highest point in Alabama at 2407 feet and we love to come up here when we're riding. I highly recommend a visit here to anyone who finds themselves near the area.

There's a small lake that borders the camping and picnic area and while we were snapping pics of the view, we noticed this poor chap pushing his bike to the camping area where we were parked.
By the time he made his way by us, I spoke a sympathetic hello in his direction and he managed to mumble out a return greeting. I felt a little guilty that right at that moment, that he was not sharing my jubilant attitude... understandably so.

We had a great rest of the day, and I really enjoyed our "cool" ride through the park. Our afternoons still like to heat up to the high 60's and low 70's, but the crispy 42 degree mornings are a promise of what's to come.

HAPPY FALL YA'LL !!

PIC OF THE WEEK... PLUS A COUPLE

Saturday morning we headed north, knowing the fall foliage would be at it's peaking beauty around Mt. Cheaha State Park. Besides being the highest point in Alabama at 2407 feet, it's fun to ride on these twisty, hilly, playful roads... and the change of seasons makes going back a delightful treat!

FALL REFLECTIONS
Smooth lake water shines a reflective image of the colorful trees along these banks.

Harley took several great shots like this one, while riding down the road.
He's really quite good at it and I'll be putting together a slide show of other fantastic shots he got during our chilly Saturday ride.

The breathtaking views at the overlooks were stunning and could keep you staring at the horizon for hours.
Bald Rock on top of Mt. Cheaha State Park.

The weatherman promised a nice fall day with plenty of sunshine and temps in the upper 60's. A great day for riding! When we left the house at 9:30 a.m., it was 53 degrees and overcast! Brrrrrrr!

Have a great Monday everybody!

PIC OF THE WEEK

CHEAHA STATE PARK
The Saturday before Mother's Day, Harley and I took a ride up to Cheaha State Park in the Talladega National Forest. We love riding through this area, and since we were up this way to take Harley's mom out for lunch, we decided to take a little detour through the park. Sitting on top of the mountain is a nice lodge and country store, as well as a stone tower marking the highest point in Alabama at 2,407 feet. Not quite nose bleed time, but beautiful scenery, none the less. This would be a great place for visitors to stay a few days and ride the beautiful surrounding Alabama highways.

BTW... this is the picture I submitted for the Harley Davidson Mosaic Cover Project. We'll all be looking through magnifiers when that one comes out so we can find ourselves. LOL! "Where's Lady R?"

Hope you all have a great week. Happy Monday everybody!
