BETTER LATE THAN NEVER... PIC OF THE WEEK

THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI
Twofer bonus... for being late!
I grew up on this river and never realized just how much I missed it until I came home for a visit. My friends and I would turn into river rats during our summers as we water skied up and down the river hitting our favorite little inlets, and floated around on pontoons, partying from one sand bar to the other. We'd have secret places along the river banks that made great areas for our weekends of camping and of course, cool parties our parents didn't know about.

Coming home to Iowa always brings forth a plethora of memories, but when I stand on this bluff in Eagle Point Park and over look the Mighty Mississippi River, it really feels like I'm home. I had a great visit with my family and I hated to leave them. I'm already feeling a bit homesick and look forward to the day we can return. Thankfully, I have a lot to keep me busy during the next few days, so hopefully, I'll be able to survive my adjustment.

Sorry I missed you on Monday, but 'better late... than never' I always say. I hope to get back into the swing of things real soon. Have a nice rest of the week!

I always felt like someone lied when they told me "you can't go home again" and it sounds like you think so too.

Let's all raise a glass to our childhood pleasures!

I remember crossing the mighty Mississip when we moved to AZ. What a powerful river.

I feel the same way about Cape Cod. Childhood memories that will last a lifetime. Glad you had a good trip. And glad you're back.

How was the party?

My favorite part of the Mississippi River is down in New Orleans. Just might have something to do with the French Quarter and Canal Street. She is a beautiful river.

Glad you had a good trip with great memories. Looks looks home to me.

Good thing you didn't visit in the middle of winter.)~

I didn't get quite far enough West to see the river when I was out in the mid-west last summer. I wish I had. But, I will be seeing it THIS SUMMER when I go to Sturgis. I'm really looking forward to it. Even though water doesn't seem quite right to me minus the smell of salt air, I'm sure I'll still be impressed by the mighty mississip.

Glad u had a nice trip. Welcome back.

Great pic's! Glad to see you back. I had a friend who lived on the Mississippi. She used to talk about how much she loved, "Skeeterbug Pie". I guess she would dig down in the banks and pull up the clay and eat it. Interesting! If ever make it to the Mississippi, I'm gonna try some Skeeterbug Pie.

Ah yes, partying on the sandbars. Brings back great memories from my teen years. I spent a lot time on the Wisconsin River and Mississippi River during those years. Thanx for the pictures and the walk down memory lane. Glad you got to spend time with your family.

Glad you had a great trip...can see why you're homesick already...when you think of home think of Robert Frost...also when you get homesick, think of the snow and winter...that ought to do it..
Great shots.

Ms. Lady R: Sorry I missed you while you were here. Rain in my town kept me from venturing too far. I thought of you and your family all day wishing for dry weather so we could meet. Next time.

To people who have never seen the Mississippi it really is impressive. Having crossed it so many times sometimes I forget just how magnificent it is. But all it takes is for me to stop and sit on the banks for awhile to see it all again as the great river it is, mud and all. With any luck in a couple of weeks I will get to sit at one of my favorite spots again and just enjoy it.

Great pictures!

I'm glad that you had a great trip and a great time in I O Way! :) I love DBQ. I always say that it really is "God's" Country there. It is so beautiful with the bluffs and the river. Plus it really is an up and coming town. Always something going on there.

Chessie... I've heard that too, and no matter how long I've been away... I still claim Iowa as my "home". The memories seem to rekindle themselves as I move about my old hometown... some things are exactly the same as they were, while at the same time, other things become completely unrecognizable. Either way, I still enjoy coming home to old Dubuque.

Webster... As much pleasure as living on a river can provide, it can also take away. The power of the Mississippi is definitely not to be taken lightly, as it's taken many souls to a watery grave. I had a blast and hated to see my time with ALL (aunts, uncles, cousins, babies, babies, babies!)my family come to an end.

Ann... Memories for me are like the air I breath. I sooooo need them! I love bringing them back to life, and spending time in my old stomping grounds, does exactly that. It's good to be back, I just wish I could shake the "homesick" feeling that's still got a hold of me.

AZ Dude... while in the Navy, I was stationed on the West Bank in New Orleans, right on the Mississippi River. During that time I crossed that river all time and every time I did, I would think... "That water just came from Dubuque." I always felt like I had a little piece of home with me. It was very cool.

Mr. M... If it was winter, we'd have probably gone ice fishing! LOL! I've been home for Christmas before and was happy to get a snow fix! I try to look for the silver lining in every cloud... makes life a little nicer.

Joker... You'll cross over a few rivers on that trip, but I think none will be as grand as the Mississippi. However, when I stand on the bluffs of Eagle Point Park and look at the huge mass of water before me, it's hard to imagine that approximately four hours north, you can actually jump across this might river. Hope you have a great trip. Won't be long now!

Masterchief... Mmmmmm. "Skeeterbug Pie"! Oh yeah, we'll get you some of that when we take you "Snipe Hunting" too. LOL! ;}

Dean... I was in Wisconsin too! My brother took us out to eat to one of our old favorite Supper Clubs across the river. On our way back we went down to O'Learys Landing (changed alot!) on the Wisconsin side and got a great pic of the river, Iowa, and a sunset behind me. Didn't get any cheese though. Darn... missed my chance!

mq01... your right... Dubuque will always be my rock (besides my hubby of course). I try to never forget where I came from. It helps me stay balanced.

Baron... It's like I said to Mr. M. I get homesick for snow sometimes and I just have to go home for Christmas. I love the south, but you can't take my foundation out from under me. I'll be a Midwesterner at heart no matter how Southern I become. LOL!

Fasthair... I'm sorry we couldn't have worked something out too. The weather was a bit of an issue the whole time we were there. My hubby kept reminding me how glad we should be we didn't have the bikes. Hmmmm. Maybe he's right, but I still hated I couldn't enjoy my long road trip home on the Glide. I guess we'll just have to try it again some day.

Steph... While I was growing up, it was mostly a blue collar industrial town. All my friends had dad's that either worked at the Packing Co., John Deere, ect. It wasn't until after I left home, and the economy struck a lot of these type businesses, forcing families to move away. The city transformed into a tourist attraction by restoring old historical buildings, put in a Dog Track and improved the River Boats with supper cruises and gambling. Pretty nice. I wish we could have met... maybe on the next trip.

Yeah, I was surprised the last time I was in Dubuque. It all looked so fresh and new. I remember when we used to go there in high school. Dubuque was kind of a dirty industrial town.

But did you get bike-sick while you were in Iowa?

LadyR: I just read your comment re: Snipe Hunting. I went to Arkansas with my BFF and her family when I was 14. We visited her uncle's cabin in the Ozarks and they had us hunting Snipe! LMAO!!! We totally fell for it, too. :) Great memories!

Willy D... YES SIR!!! I even did the wave from the passenger seat. LOL! Every time we passed a biker, I gave them a wave. Harley thought I was crazy, but by the time we got to Paduca, KY, he humored me with a wave too. I missed my bike. Terribly!!

Ann... ;)
