PIC OF THE WEEK - CHRISTMAS IN DUBUQUE

I'm leaving our warm temps behind and going north, to cold country so I can enjoy my Christmas holiday in Dubuque, Iowa with my family.  We don't get snow in the south very often so I still get a kick out of playing in it when I go home to visit.

CHRISTMAS IN DUBUQUE
The Julien Dubuque Bridge

Looking over the downtown area
I took these pictures two years ago, the last time I was home for Christmas, and I'm reminded how old my hometown is.  Although, there are many new things to bring visitors to Dubuque, she holds the title as oldest town in Iowa.

I love standing on this hill and looking out over the city.  It feels so... homey.

I don't think they have snow on the ground yet, but there's still time.  We are taking the Jeep, so I'm not worried. Let it snow... let it snow... let it snow!

Have a great week everybody!

It looks like a very pretty city. I love old buildings. Although it looks mighty chilly in those photos.

Have a wonderful time with family.

Lady R:

even before I read your words and stared at the first photo, I knew what you were going to say about taking the Jeep. It was just an excuse to find snow somewhere. Snow always made me smile when I had my Jeep, nowadays, not so much

enjoy your family time . . .

Christmas? What’s all this talk about Christmas? I’m not over my sugar-high from Halloween yet.

Have a good time.

Nothing beats white Christmas with family. I will miss mine this year, as we have neither the budget nor the vacation days left to travel overseas...
Enjoy and happy times.

I'm about 2 1/2 hours S.E. of Dubuque and we have only had 1/2" of snow so far and it didn't stick. I have a feeling we are not going to see a white Christmas.

Either way...welcome home!

Trobairitz... Thank you! When I was growing up there, I couldn't appreciate the historical beauty. I just thought everything looked old!! I love to come back home now and realize what a pretty town Dubuque really is.

Bobskoot,
We talked about taking it to Iowa and playing in the snow when we were still in the dealership deciding if we were even going to buy a Jeep or not!

Two years ago, I went home alone and took a plane, and so did my brother (he's in Florida). We both almost didn't make it home because of terrible snow storms. Now that I'm planning to taking the Jeep, Mr. Winter can bring it! We're not afraid of no stinkin' snow flakes!

(If I get snowed in now, I'll know Karma reads my blog.) lol!

Lookin' for flakes,
Lady R

Webster... Well, she say she can't anyway. We'll see how she feels by the end of the week! :)

Willy D... Hell, I get a bigger sugar high during Christmas than I ever could during Halloween. We start getting "goodies" the first week of December. Home-made goodies! Lots and lots of them! Our patients love us and they think it's quite humorous to bring the dental girls sugary treats. We're so special!! ;/

SonjaM... I'm fortunate this year in that my boss decided to close our dental office for the week between Christmas and New Year's. Yay! Instant vacation without vacation days. I got lucky this time.

Biker Baby... Maybe it will wait until we get there, snow like crazy so we can enjoy it while we are home, and stop two days before we leave. Hmmmm... I wonder if Mr. Winter takes requests?

Reminds me of going to Louisiana at Christmas as a kid to visit grandparents and on occassion having snow. Those were the Good-Ol-Days for sure.

Thanks for the memory jogger and ya'll have a fun, safe trip.

If you get into the white stuff, be careful. That short wheelbase tends to want to spin around, even on larger vehicles like the early Blazers. That's the reason I like the full size 4x4 trucks. Hope you have a safe and happy trip!

I smile when I think of you in the dealership already dreaming about snow and you hadn't even bought it yet.

I also think about driving a Jeep in the snow, and I don't even own one.

AZD... Why is it we always refer to our childhood memories as... the good ol' days. Ah... to be a kid again. Well... maybe not. :/

Merry Christmas to you and your new bride. I hope you have a very nice holiday.

Jim P... No doubt! The first time I took a turn in the rain with a little too much speed, it felt like I was trying to fishtail. It happened more than once, making me realize I had to make some adjustments to my driving. Especially on slippery surfaces!

I love my Jeep, but there's no doubt that big orange baby is capable of spinning around faster than Linda Blair's head!

Bobskoot... that's okay. I dream about a lot of things too. Remember... Dreams are free!

Those pictures overlooking the city of Dubuque have a familiar look to them. We're they taken from near to the top of the Fenelon Place Elevator? Have a great holiday.

Lady R (Di) said...

Gary... It sure is! We locals always referred to it as the 4th Street Elevator, but it is one in the same. I remember reading about your passing through this area when you were riding across our beautiful country. I was like... "hey, that's my hometown!"
I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas too. (Do you celebrate Christmas?)

Gary France said...

I thought I recognized the view.  It's funny really as only about a week ago I was writing about Dubuque and the elevator, for my book.  Yes, we celebrate Christmas.  In fact, my (American) wife, Jacki,e bought many US customs to the UK when she moved here.  Our Christmases used to be quiet, subtle affairs, but now the house we live in is decorated with what seems like 50,000 lights and the village we live in now has a strange glow emanating from it.....
