PIC OF THE WEEK PLUS BONUS VIDEO

BIKERS FOR BABIES - TALLADEGA 2009
Saturday, August 1, 2009 was the March of Dimes Bikers For Babies fund raising event at Talladega Super Speedway. Our buddy, Big Ed, rode up from PC early that morning and the three of us cruised up to the track to join hundreds of other bikers take their parade laps around one of the fastest tracks in Nascar Motor Sports while helping a good cause at the same time.

Someone named Jojo posted this cool video to share of her ride, and I thought I would post it here too. I'm not in this clip, but it will still give you a sense of what it was like (If the clip doesn't work just click on the link above the video box).
Bikers for babies @ talladega

I had a great time and I plan to do this again. Even though I got scolded twice for going above the yellow line and riding in the second lane, maybe next year I can raise enough money to get them to let me cruise the wall. Woo Hoo!

Have a nice Monday everybody!

KICK ASS!!! I'm so glad to know that they do this! I got to ride the track at Charlotte a few years ago. It is SO AWESOME!!

Let me know when you're doing this again and I'll try to make a donation to GET YOU OVER THE YELLOW LINE!!

That is so freakin awesome!

Looks like a great time. How fast were you allowed to go? How many laps?

Ann... It was sooooo much fun! Do they do this at the track in Arizona too! How close are you to Phoenix? I think it would be cool to go around and visit all the tracks and put that on my accomplishments list. "Rode on all the Nascar tracks with the Glide"!

Jocelyn... It was "kick ass" girl! Woo Hoo! I just wish I could've opened her up a little bit. It was still exciting, but what a rush that would have been! I'm not sure how much I would have to raise to be able to ride the wall... maybe I just need to get one of those little orange vest thingys that say POLICE on it and I'll be good to go!

Hopefully, we can get up to Charlotte sometime when they have the event there. I noticed that they do this at several, if not all the tracks in the Nascar circuit. Wouldn't that be a hoot??

Canajun... We were allowed to go 3 laps on a 2.5 mile track. The lead bike only went about 65 mph and you were not allowed to pass him. So in order to have a little more fun, we would lag back a little, let them get farther ahead of us so when we got on it in the turns (especially if you go above the yellow line and ride in the first or second lane)you can clip along pretty good. I saw 85 mph once, I gave it more throttle after that... but I was too busy watching my mirrors and riding my line. It was like riding in a cereal bowl. The turns are sooooo steep, Harley said while he was behind me once... it looked like my right saddle bag was dragging the ground. He got over 90 mph one time before they pointed at us to go back below the yellow line.

We will definitely go back and do this again. Too much fun!!

B.B... I was pretty stoked! I've always wanted to ride that track... now I just need to do it in a race car someday. Maybe I should change my name to "Speedy"
(BTW... got a real live speeding ticket the other day. Phooey!)

mq01... See my note to Jocely. All I need is one of those Police or Volunteer vests and the wall is mine!!!

Awesome! I wanna ride the track too. Looks like you would have to be moving pretty fast to stay up high on the track.

Ms Jr Ewing... Thank you very much for that generous offer and what a great idea... to pass the hat! I had a blast and I'm looking forward to going again next year. Miss ya'll and hope your doing well!

Dave... I was doing about 85 in the middle of the turn, in the second lane on the track. (Where I wasn't supposed to be, but hey... I'm here, and I had this chance!) The riders that got up right next to the wall had to be doing around 90 or above I'm sure. I'm seriously going to find out what I need to do to be a track volunteer next year. I want to be the one that rides high and tells everyone else to get below the yellow line! LOL! Plus... I would be able to ride around the track all day while the different groups got to run they're 3 laps. Woo Hoo!

Looks like it was a great event, and for a great cause, the March of Dimes. For some perspective on the kind of the work they do, I invite you to check out this short video -- ahamoment.com/pg/moments/view/5187 -- which tells the story of one man's "aha moment" that led him to understand the importance of supporting this organization. I think you'll find it inspirational.

Thanks,

Baron... yes I was!! I'm posting a journal entry in a day or so... really describing the "high" of running my Glide on the track. For me... I was in heaven!

Jack... I did watch that video. Thanks for the link. They are a great organization and I'm glad I could participate in helping them raise funds. Getting to run the track is just a bonus, the real reward is in helping others. Thanks for stopping by.
