PIC OF THE WEEK - VICKSBURG MILITARY PARK

Author's note: I had a small problem posting this Monday, and I just noticed that the Google reader didn't pick it up. I'm just re-posting my Monday's post with a new date and time to see if it works. Just an experiment... sorry to bother you. ;)

VICKSBURG, MS... In honor of today being Memorial Day, I've decided to share my Vicksburg experience with you, so I created a slide show for today's Pic of the Week. I hope you all are having a safe and happy holiday weekend!

"See what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key... Let us get Vicksburg and all that country is ours. The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket." ~ Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America

Last summer, Harley and I spent a few glorious days riding the Glides along the entire length of the Natchez Trace Parkway. During that awesome historical adventure, we took a small detour over to Vicksburg to visit the Vicksburg Military Park.

This awesome park was 16 miles of somber grandeur as we gazed upon 1,325 historic monuments and markers identifying the different States and Companies who fought and died on these very grounds. That historic 47 day siege sprawled across 1,800 acres of trenches and hills that would challenge even the strongest of men, without considering the fact there were so many who were sick and wounded.
Vicksburg Military Park is a place that should be on everyone's bucket list. I will visit there again when I can find myself in that area. I was humbled to realize the magnitude of life lost in order to mold and shape our country toward what it is today. It really makes you appreciate those who still do that... sacrifice their life for our freedom. To them I say... THANK YOU and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Have a great week everybody!

Vicksburg was a decisive battle as you know. I regreted not going there last year my wife and I were so close. This is a great tribute you have givin to those buried there. And Taps, It always gets me. Read the story on how Taps came about and it too will get you. When I here of losing a local Vet I sometimes go on line and play Taps. It is a little of me honoring he or her for what they have givin. God Bless America and those that gave their lives God Bless those men and women. Thank you D

Taps is a very powerful and emotional piece of music for me. It probably always will be.

I plan to go back and visit Vicksburg again some day. I would like to stay a couple days there and explore other historical sites. It's fun to relive and imagine the days back then.

Hope you had a nice holiday. Now it's back to the ol' grind. :(

I visited there back when I was a teen. Don’t remember much as I was a stupid teen. Thanks for the refresher :)

Willy... I can't think of any teenager who would be interested in a park full of historic markers and monuments. For me... it was all about boys and cars. I'm sure it was the same for you... well, maybe with girls. LOL!
